Misconceptions about “Home Care Coverage” through Medicare and Health Insurance Benefits: There is a common misconception by many that Medicare and Health Insurance will cover “ALL” related “Home Care” expenses. Unfortunately, there are many services that are not covered and essential in providing adequate coverage for seniors while they attempt to remain in their own home. Let us Review what is covered through Medicare and Health Insurance and what is not:
WHAT'S COVERED THROUGH MEDICARE AND HEALTH INSURANCE:
Home Health Care – Usually provided by an RN, LVN, Physical Therapist or other licensed Practitioners. Services include: Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Wound Care, Skilled Nursing and Social Workers Visits, Certified Nurse Assistant (C.N.A) visits (may be provided by limited to 1-2 hours a week).
HOSPICE CARE: Focuses on the Spiritual, Physical and Emotional Support for end of life care. Services include: Pastoral Support, Social Workers, Education to Patient & Family, Nursing Care, Medication and Crisis Care may be provided (but limited to 2-3 days of care).
WHAT IS NOT COVERED: Private Pay and Non-Medical Home Care: They fill the “Gap” where “home Health and Hospice” leave off. Services include: Personal Care, Companionship, Homemaker Services, Meal Preparation, Medication Reminders Only, Grocery Shopping, Errand Services, Sitters at Facilities and Hospitals, Picking Up Prescriptions and much more. These services are often the MOST CRITICAL in allowing one to remain in the comfort of your home. Often family members are unable to assist for numerous reasons and they is why Non-Medical Home Care agencies are a great resource.
WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS? LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE. This insurance will pay for services to help individuals who are unable to perform certain “activities of daily living.” Many seniors (after age 60-65 years – gets very expensive) may still be eligible to obtain purchase Long Term Care Insurance. This type of insurance may help preserve your savings because they are designed to pay for the services that Medicare and Health Insurance will not cover. Talk to your financial planner or Insurance Agent to determine if you qualify. Again, if you can stay in your home for as long as possible, consider a NON-MEDICAL Home Care Agency to help supplement what Medicare and Health Insurance does not cover.
